Understanding Your Urine Colour in Relation To Your Health and Wellness

Understanding Your Urine Colour in Relation To Your Health and Wellness

Understanding your Urine Colour in relation to your health and wellness: Urine naturally carries a yellow pigment. When you’re hydrated, your urine will be a light yellow, close-to-clear colour. However, the normal colour of urine is discussed by doctors as “urochrome.”

If you’re dehydrated, you’ll notice that your urine becomes deep yellowish-brown or even light brown. Different pigments in foods we eat or medications we take can be carried through our digestive tracts and change the colour of our urine. Sometimes our urine colour can be a sign of a health condition that we need to address and understand vividly.

Urine colours depend on what you and I do eat daily, or with any medications you’re presently taking, and how much water your drink, makes our urine colours varies. Many of these colours fall on the range of what “normal” urine can look like, but there are cases where unusual urine colours call for concern.

Urine Colouration

  • CLEAR: Clear urine indicates that you’re drinking more than the daily recommended amount of water. While being hydrated is a good thing, drinking too much water can rob your body of electrolytes. Urine that occasionally looks clear is no reason to panic, but urine that’s always clear could show that you need to cut back on how much water you’re drinking.

  • YELLOWISH TO AMBER: The colour of “typical” urine falls on the spectrum of light yellow to a deeper amber colour. The pigment that’s naturally in your urine becomes more diluted as you drink water. Urochrome is produced by your body breaking down haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in your red blood cells. In most situations, the colour of your urine will depend on how diluted this pigment is. Having a lot of B-vitamins in your bloodstream can cause urine to appear neon yellow.

  • RED OR PINK: Urine may look red or pink if you eat fruits with naturally deep pink or magenta pigments, such as: beets, rhubarb, blueberries. While urine that’s red or pink might be from something you ate recently, there are sometimes other causes. Some health conditions can cause blood to appear in your urine, a symptom known as haematuria, including: enlarged prostate, kidney stones, tumours in the bladder and kidney.

  • ORANGE: If your urine appears orange, it could be a symptom of dehydration. If you have urine that’s orange in addition to light coloured stools, bile may be getting into your bloodstream because of issues with your bile ducts or liver. Adult-onset jaundice can also cause orange urine.

  • BLUE OR GREEN: Can be caused by our food colouring substances. It can also be the result of dyes used in medical tests performed on your kidneys or bladder. A bacterial infection can also cause urine to turn blue, green, or even indigo purple.

  • DARK BROWN: When your urine comes out dark brown, it indicates dehydration. Dark brown urine can be a side effect of certain medications, including metronidazole (Flagyl) and chloroquine (Aralen). A condition called porphyria can cause a build-up of the natural chemicals in your bloodstream and cause rusty or brown urine. Dark brown urine can also be an indicator of liver disease, as it can be caused by bile getting into your urine.

  • CLOUDY: Cloudy urine can be an insignia of a urinary tract infection. It can also be a symptom of a chronic disease and kidney conditions. In so many cases, cloudy urine is another sign of being dehydrated.

Cloudy urine with foam or bubbles is called pneumaturia. Notice, this can be a symptom of serious health conditions, including Crohn’s disease or diverticulitis. There are some cases where urine is foamy, and doctors can’t determine the cause.

Speak to a doctor or a clinical nutritionist if you’ve ever concerned about blood in your urine, or if your urine is coloured light pink or dark red; see a doctor right away! This can be a sign of a serious health condition and should be diagnosed as soon as possible. NOTE: Urine should pick up where you left off with its typical colouring formation within 2 to 3 days after you have noticed an unusual colour when you pee.

We huge you to drink more fluids daily, as the more water you drink, the clearer your urine looks. As a general rule of thumb, it’s usually a good sign for your health when the color of your urine is a pale shade of yellow or clear. Dark-yellow urine can be normal, but it might mean you need more fluids in your system. Drinking too much water can lead to overhydration, which dilutes vital electrolytes and can cause water intoxication, a rare but serious condition that can lower blood sodium levels in the body; which is dangerous. These risks are peculiar with many athletes and individuals who engage in rigorous and physical activity.

However, insufficient water intake – risks you being underhydration, which can cause dehydration, fatigue, and weak cognitive and optimal performance.

In conclusion, we ask that you discuss with a Healthcare Provider – in the case of an abnormality signs noticed about your urine concerns.

  • Observe any forms of Bloody in your Urine
  • Clear and dark brown urination
  • Tirelessly abnormal urine color, disturbing to your knowledge
  • Pink, red, and/or misty brown urine
